What is TypingBench?

TypingBench is a free, browser-based collection of typing tools: timed typing speed tests, paragraph practice, a 10-key keystrokes-per-hour test, an alphabet challenge, a keyboard tester, and a downloadable typing certificate. Every test runs entirely in your browser — there are no accounts, no sign-ups, and nothing you type is ever uploaded or stored.

The project exists for one reason: measuring typing skill should be instant, honest, and comparable. You open the page, the tool is already there, the timer starts with your first keystroke, and the result uses the same scoring conventions employers and keyboarding courses have used for decades.

How our tests are scored

All timed tests on TypingBench follow one engine with published, auditable rules. A "word" is standardized as five characters, including spaces — the international convention for typing measurement. Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters divided by five per minute; raw WPM counts every keystroke; accuracy is the share of correct keystrokes out of all scored keystrokes, counted per keystroke so that repaired mistakes still count as errors.

The 10-key test reports keystrokes per hour (KPH): correct keystrokes scaled to an hourly rate from your exact elapsed time — in the 60-second format, simply correct keystrokes × 60. The timer in every timed test uses the browser's high-resolution clock and recomputes remaining time from timestamps, so switching tabs can neither pause nor distort a run.

Typing speed benchmarks

Numbers only help when they have context. These orientation bands summarize commonly cited ranges for adults on standard prose tests; individual results vary with keyboard, text, and fatigue:

Reference ranges

Words per minute (WPM): below 30 — beginner; 30–40 — average adult; 40–60 — solid professional range; 60–80 — advanced; above 80 — expert. Keystrokes per hour (KPH, numeric data entry): 5,000–7,000 — beginner; 8,000–10,000 — typical professional data entry; above 12,000 at 98% accuracy — elite. For the alphabet challenge: 6–8 seconds is typical for a confident typist, under 4 seconds is exceptional.

Editorial standards

Every practice passage on TypingBench is written for this project and released to the public domain — no text is scraped from other sites. Pages cite external references (such as Wikipedia articles on typing conventions and keyboard layouts) so you can verify the standards we follow. Pages carry a visible byline and update date, and the same dates are published in machine-readable schema for search engines and AI systems.

The typing certificate states plainly what it is: the result of an online practice typing test, not a government-issued, accredited, or independently proctored certification.

The team

TypingBench is an independent tool project maintained by the TypingBench Editorial Team. We build in six languages — English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean — with locally written content and locally chosen keywords rather than machine translation, because typing habits and keyboard layouts differ from country to country.
